LOCAL CAMPAIGNING

There are three main targets for local campaigning:

MPs
Get your local MP involved in any activities that you organise in your area. Remember MPs are usually in their constituencies at the week ends.

General Public
The success of the Product Recall campaign depends on the support of the British public.
As well as the tasks actions you can undertake as an individual there are also many ways you can involve your community and help to spread awareness of the campaign:

  • Distribute leaflets
The campaign leaflets provide clear and concise information about cluster munitions. They also incorporate a tear-off postcard to be sent to the Secretary of State for Defence. It is important that these leaflets are distributed as widely as possible. Please contact Landmine Action if you need more leaflets:

    Email: info@landmineaction.org
  • Collect signatures for petition
The UK Product Recall Campaign is supporting Handicap International’s petition to ban cluster munitions. As well as completing the online petition, you can also download petition forms to collect signatures and send them back to Landmine Action who will ensure they are added to the petition.
  • Public briefings
If a number of people are interested in learning more about the issue you may want to organise a briefing. You may want to contact your local MP and local campaign groups to see if they wish to participate.  Landmine Action can help you identify useful resources for such an event.
  • Fundraising
You may wish to undertake fundraising activities such as sponsored events and collections, which also raise awareness of the campaign.

Donations towards the Product Recall campaign or any of Landmine Action’s work can be made online at http://www.landmineaction.org/involvedcc.html or sent directly to Landmine Action

Shopping centres, schools, offices and libraries are all good locations for bringing the campaign to a wider audience.  Landmine Action can provide you with posters, leaflets and other resources to support your event.

Local Media
Journalists are always looking for interesting stories in their area, particularly local angles on issues of national importance.

When planning an event don’t forget to contact your local papers and radio station in advance. A Landmine Action spokesperson may be available to provide background information or a quote for your news story.

Even though the issue is serious don’t be afraid to make your event fun, this could be appealing to your local media outlets.
