NORWAY TAKES THE LEAD IN A NEW PROCESS ON CLUSTER MUNITIONS AS THE CCW FAILS TO ADDRESS THIS URGENT HUMANITARIAN PROBLEM

UK BLOCKS PROGRESS ON WORK ON CLUSTER MUNITIONS WITHIN THE EU

At a private meeting of the EU at the CCW this morning, the UK vetoed a proposal for a meeting of government military experts to make recommendations to heads of delegations by Wednesday on a common position on clusters munitions. 24 STATES CALL FOR A NEW TREATY ON CLUSTER MUNITIONS

Momentum is growing in Geneva for new negotiations towards a new international law on cluster munitions. Support for this new cluster munition treaty has jumped from 6 to 24 states in the first week of the Conventional Weapons Review Conference and comes as a new accord enters into force on Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) that does not sufficiently address the problem of cluster munitions.

UN CONVENTION ON CERTAIN CONVENTIONAL WEAPONS (CCW) IN GENEVA

The Third Review Conference of the UN Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) convenes in Geneva from Tuesday 7 – Friday 17 November 2006. Campaigners will be looking to assembled states for immediate and adequate action on the urgent issue of cluster munitions.
Austria, Ireland, Mexico, New Zealand and Sweden are calling for negotiations on a new law on cluster munitions. Belgium and Norway have officially stopped their use of the weapons.
